Admiral Cat Kimbridge and the Galactic Coalition of Planets must struggle to hold off an aggressive slaving syndicate bent on dominating Earth and the other member worlds of the GCP. New allies and technologies allow the battle to be fought between parallel universes. Just as it seems the GCP will prevail and right will conquer wrong… Cat discovers the real force behind the aggressors is an ancient and virtually unstoppable foe. Retribution is the second in a three-part story arc called “The Proxy Wars.” This is the fourth book in the best-selling Catherine Kimbridge series. This book picks up the story immediately following book 3. If you like fast-action SCIFI with a heart then give Admiral "Cat" Kimbridge a chance to become a part of your universe. This volume contains TWO special surprises at the end of the book. Both are sure to please fans of hardcore science fiction! [NOTE CKC4 is back from the editors. Many editing enhancements/corrections have been made as of v9.]

Uncounted millennia ago the uncreated Creator reached forth a hand and touched a series of disparate universes. The touch set in motion ripples that created life in the Creator’s image… a life that was self-aware… a life that aspired to be more than it was… a life that sought to create in its own right. Love and fear walked hand in hand. Thus the stage was set for an epic conflict that would span the universes. These are the adventures of one brave soul and her quest to protect all life. These are the Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles.

The Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles #4 Retribution eBook Andrew Beery

The series was originally built around the eponymous heroine and was a lot of fun, with uncomplicated plots and some interesting ideas on physics and cosmology. I (mostly) set aside the rotten editing, figuring it would get better.

This book picks up in the middle of an invasion from another galaxy, continuing a cliff-hanger from the previous book. Most of the story narrates an attempt to stop the baddies by invading their galaxy and counter-attacking. While the action scenes are fairly well constructed, the 'gee-whiz' factor of finding out how powerful and smart Kimbridge is has petered out. The plot and writing fall short of compensating for the lack of character growth of Kimbridge and her close team. Seeing how she'd innovate with new capabilities was a large part of the fun of earlier books, to me. A 3-star, so-so book, in short.

The proofing is the worst so far, which says a lot. This time, there are gobs of run-together words, so I'm safe to say that no electronic spellchecking was involved. Lose another star.

Will I buy the next one? I'll get a sample first, to see if the story improves and the proofing is over the greatly-reduced threshold I've set for this series. We'll see.

The Catherine Kimbridge Chronicles #4 Retribution eBook Andrew Beery Reviews

Author Proof more please, just reading this aloud will help you catch most of the problems Mr. Beery. I quite like this series, and your writing style in general. Where is the universe building, the touches of spirituality, and divine design? More please.

Okay potential readers be aware there are a lot of proofing errors, but the storyline throughout all the books is quite good. This book is in my opinion the weakest of an interesting space opera. This one is extremely battle oriented, with less of the unique touches that have made this series so intriguing. Worth reading, as is the whole series!
In my review of CK#3, I said it had become one of my favorite series. So I am sad to report that Book 4 just does not deliver the same type of story. And it's not a stand alone book -- if you haven't read the first 3, you won't understand some of the critical stuff in #4. So the readers are pretty much going to be those who enjoyed the first 3. (I mean if you didn't like the first 3, why would you sign up for #4?) And this story just does not hold the same intrigue and suspense level. Sometimes, a sci-fi series includes a book that doesn't measure up but then rebounds with the next one. Sometimes they just run out of good stories to tell. I hope we're not there yet on this one because I truly did love the first 3 books. Book 4 --- disappointing.
I've read all 4 books so far and have mostly enjoyed them. As others have stated the editing leaves a lot to be desired, but by in large the typos didn't adversely effect my reading. The story picks up where #3 left off, which is good, but there are several characters developed in previous books that just disappear in this book, which is bad. As a reader I've become invested in some of these characters and to just have characters, and entire worlds actually, seem to disappear from the story line provided for some hiccups for me. The initial characters and worlds are well represented here, but it almost seems as if Beery has lost track of the different worlds--or has created too many new ones at this point and can't figure out how to integrate them all. I'm hoping #5 will do a bit better job at that. If I'd paid more for these books I'd be feeling less generous, but at $2.99 I'm willing to keep reading a good story even though there are some hiccups along the way.
I have enjoyed Beery's Kimbridge series as an energetic and fast paced story. I like the characters and find the story interesting and engaging. Retribution was a bit too fasted paced for me. The story unfolded well and Beery kept all the elements sufficiently cohesive that all essential parts were covered, however, at times it seemes truncated and clipped. I am not a fan of long drawn out non-essential details, well written visual description are helpful and personnal interplay help to develop character and personnality, but character movement and action can be reduced to a too sterile description that lacks emotion and feeling. Drama, conflict and danger need enough development to have a viseral impact. I felt Retribution lacked some of that neccesary viseral impact especially with the return of a more dangerous and advanced play to the story. I look forward to the next installment but hope Beery returns to the more engaging writing he has produced in previous books.
Mr Beery has done a very good job with this series. He has written a credible space opera with an interesting lead character in "Cat" Kimbridge. As in nearly every sci-fi novel you have to suspend some beliefs but after that the stories are interesting and the different races are presented in a unique way. I like the fact that the various races who are introduced and integrated into the story line and all add some unique scientific discoveries, values or insights to the situation.

If you are thinking of buying this book, and have not read the earlier books I urge you to buy and read them. This novel will be more understandable and enjoyable if you do so.

What would I change and why just four stars? I would like to see more continuity from the earlier characters who were introduced. Except for a few they may be mentioned but some of the unique insights that had are lost.

Good series, and I eagerly await the what sounds like the conclusion in the 5th book.

Mr Beery, thanks for a fun read.
